Solar Eclipse in Montgomery County – Monday, April 8, 2024

On Monday, April 8, the southeastern portion of Montgomery County, Indiana will experience a total solar eclipse. This includes Crawfordsville. The remaining northwestern area will experience a partial solar eclipse. No matter where you are in Montgomery County, this will be a rare and historic astrological event.

In Crawfordsville, 1:05 minutes of total darkness will occur at approximately 3:06pm EDT.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse happens at the exact moment the Moon aligns completely between the Sun and the Earth, blocking the Sun from Earth. During this period, which lasts only minutes, total darkness will occur, depending on where on Earth you are located.

What is a Partial Solar Eclipse?

A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, but the Moon only partially covers the sun. In this occurrence, partial darkness and shadows result.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Safety Tips

It is critically important to protect your eyes from the sun when viewing a total or partial eclipse. During the event, the sun’s rays are so concentrated, they can reach the back of your eye and cause damage to the retina. For protection, use special eclipse viewing glasses, a certified viewing card or alternative methods. Avoid binoculars, telescopes, any type of glasses, including regular sunglasses.
